The first Tommy Dorsey Orchestra was formed with the remnants of the Joe Haymes orchestra, and his lyrical style and clean trombonistico both in ballads and in the most danceable, became one of the characteristic sounds of his orchestra as both throughout the era of swing. The new orchestra was successful almost from the moment he signed with RCA Victor, for example with "On Treasure Island", the first of four hits during that year, which ends up being 137 on the Billboard hits with songs like " I'm Getting Sentimental Over You "(which shows his extraordinary tonal range and masterful use of the mute, reaching the highest)," Marie, "" The Big Apple "," Music, Maestro, Please "," I 'll Never Smile Again, "" This Love of Mine, "" On the Sunny Side of the Street "," TD's Boogie Woogie, "" Well, Git' It "," Opus One "," Manhattan Serenade "and "There Are Such Things," among many others.
The orchestra attracted a wide range of the best jazz instrumentalists of the time, the trumpet players including Bunny Berigan, Ziggy Elman, Charlie Shavers and George Seaberg, trumpeter / arranger / composer Sy Oliver (who wrote "Well, Git 'It "and" Opus One "), drummer Buddy Rich and singers Jo Stafford, Dick Haymes and Frank Sinatra. Sinatra reached its first major success as a singer in Dorsey's orchestra and concludes that their control of breathing I'd learned watching Dorsey play trombone. In turn, Dorsey said that his style was indebted to that of Jack Teagarden. Another member of the orchestra also had to spend time watching and listening to Sy Oliver arrangements: trombonist Nelson Riddle, whose later collaboration with Sinatra as an arranger and director of the orchestras that backed what has been considered revolutionary for the music popular after the Second War World.
Dorsey had to dissolve his orchestra after the war, in late 1946 in particular, like many other big bands had to make because of changes in the business of the music produced in these years. But an album of greatest hits (All-Time Hits) allowed him to reorganize the orchestra in early 1947.
Tommy Dorsey in the film The Fabulous Dorseys (1947), which describes the careers of Dorsey brothers until that date.
The Dorsey brothers were reconciled later, after Jimmy dissolve their successful orchestra in 1953 and have been asked by Tommy to join his, who later became known as Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. The orchestra had performed their own tours and TV show, Stage Show, between 1954 and 1956 which, inter alia, public presentations to the entire nation to Elvis Presley.
